Employee Spotlight Interview – Daniel
Daniel Calvert - Operations Manager
Tell us about your role with IFC and how long you have been with the business.
I am the current Operations Manager and have been with IFC for 10 years.
What do you enjoy most about working at IFC?
There is always something happening at IFC, whether it be a major project, industry crisis, a problem to be solved or a staff lunch. It is never boring working at IFC that’s for sure.
What drew you to work in the supply chain industry?
After finishing school, I was keen to start working straight away, there were opportunities in the industry for ‘document runners’ so I thought I would give it a go. It was a great opportunity to meet people and learn to drive in the city as an 18 year old.
Tell us a little about your background and experience.
My first role was a document runner. I then worked at a few other forwarders working in various roles. During this period, I completed a diploma in International Trade and the national customs brokers course and moved to more senior roles.
In your experience working in the industry, what are the biggest challenges and opportunities you’ve come across so far?
The biggest challenge was COVID without a doubt. Opportunities now present for those with experience and an interest in technology as the industry is evolving quickly. It’s now much more than just delivering goods.
How do you think IFC differentiates from competitors?
IFC has a number of employees empowered to make quick decisions. Being locally owned there is no unnecessary bureaucracy to contend with. Technology is great but it’s still a service industry and decisions need to be made quickly. We have this ability.
For aspiring professionals interested in a career in the supply chain industry, what advice would you give them to kickstart their journey?
Do a traineeship or an entry level role and ask lots of questions. Further educate yourself in your own time and separate yourself from your peers.
What are your hobbies or favourite interests that you enjoy pursuing in your free time?
Kids sport, cricket, walking my dogs and searching for both the meaning of life and who really built the pyramids.
Describe your life’s motto in a few words!
‘If you’re going through hell, keep going’
