Vietnam : Weight Restrictions on Containers

The government in Vietnam introduced a new law with effect from 1 April 2014 which limits the weight of both 20 and 40 foot containers to 20 tons, which includes the weight of the container. This limit has been introduced due to restrictions on road transport movements to and from the port of arrival or departure in Vietnam.

Mobile weighbridges have been set up and, according to local reports, around 800 trucks have already been fined for being overweight. It has also led to congestion in the areas around the ports as containers found to be overweight are being re-stuffed.

We strongly recommend all export customers liaise carefully with their consignees to ensure local regulations are known to avoid any additional costs being incurred.
