Enforcement of Fumigation Certification Requirements

Who does this notice affect?

Importers and Brokers who receive and process Fumigation Certificates from countries who are not recognised under the Australian Accredited Fumigation Scheme. i.e. Non-AFAS countries.

What has changed?

The information contained in Notice to Industry 55/2009 –

Extension of fumigation certificate requirements will be revoked.

As of 1 December 2012 ALL Fumigation Certificates from Non-AFAS Treatment Providers must include either the plastic wrapping information required by Appendix 5 of the AQIS Methyl Bromide Fumigation Standard or one of the following Plastic Wrapping Declarations

  • Plastic wrapping has not been used in this consignment; or
  • This consignment has been fumigated before application of plastic wrapping; or 
  • Plastic wrapping used in this consignment conforms to the AQIS wrapping and perforation standard as found in the AQIS Methyl Bromide Fumigation Standard.

DAFF reserves the right to direct a consignment for a random inspection to verify the validity of the information that has been provided on the treatment certificate.

If the Treatment Certificate accompanying the consignment does not meet this requirement, then the consignment will be directed as per the consignment’s ICON Case.
